You can use the app by Just hold the phone at eye level and align the crosshairs on the ground at the point you want to measure. The phone will display a continuously updated horizontal distance below the cross-hair from the camera to the point. The distance is calculated by trigonometry, so for accurate measurement, you need to always keep the phone at your eye level, even if the angle of the phone is pointed to the ground.
